You and your friends are settling into your seats. A new action movie is about to begin, and you have got the essentials - a large tub of cheese flavored popcorn, nachos with cheese topped with jalapenos, and soda. Sure, you spent a fortune on these snacks, but hey, food is part of what makes the movies fun.

Just as the lights dim, you catch a whiff of… Dhokla ? You twist your neck, searching for the culprit. Then you spot her: just a row back, some girl is chowing down on homemade dhokla.

How did she get that in here? You wonder.

You want to just scream and throw popcorn in anger on her and her dhokla. Then you remember how much you paid for it.

Fun Fact: the girl could just be me.

The thing about rules is that it is made to be broken. And there is no better feeling than sneaking food in the movie theater.

Smuggling food from outside in theater is seen as a taboo everywhere. People feel ashamed when they are caught with food by the bouncers in the theater and have to take it out before they enter the premises. I am telling you, it must have been their faces which shouted ‘Hey, I have food in my bag! Come catch me!’. They just really don't know how to sneak in food !

Recently, the government has lifted the ban of prohibition of bringing in outside food in theaters, but the multiplex owners, being calculative, have opposed the same. If they allow in food, who is going to buy their expensive popcorn ? We end up paying three times the money on food, than the amount paid for the ticket, which is just exorbitant sum of amount.

If we look back 2 decades ago, it was pretty reasonable - cheap popcorn, some chips, samosas, Sosyo and the regular sodas. My parents never spent on theater food. They’d have their lunch before the movie and munch on peanuts in the screening - probably the easiest thing to sneak in!

I do love Netflix, binge and chill at home, but sneaking food in movies is next level thrilling adventure in its own! I like to munch on snacks while watching a movie, but don’t spending on theater snacks. What not can be sneaked in movies ! Maggi, sandwiches, vadapav, popcorn, aloo parathas, juice, soups even to the extent of even eating dal-chawal-sabji-roti in the hall! It is easy to get a lot of stares and snickering from people around when they see steel dabbas being opened with home cooked food. Here my neighbor would be munching on re-heated samosas, while I’d be relishing on piping hot maggi just the way I like. I am sure the neighbor also would want to have a bite of my food.

So, here are the 3 things you should take care of while sneaking in food and make you look like a pro:

  • Carry a handbag/backpack big enough with your lunchbox at the end topped with gazillion things that it becomes difficult for the security to even dive inside and bother to check all of it.

  • Keep calm and carry on! There is nothing to be nervous about the food in your bag. Just walk in normally. Nobody will suspect.

  • Make sure to carry something that is easier to eat and pack in spill proof dabbas or it is going to become a huge mess.

Laws sometimes exist to encourage us to be the most boring versions of ourselves, and by own principles.

However, here’s what I suggest: Smuggle foods into movie theaters, full stop, no questions asked.
